Looking Back with Gratitude

Yesterday I had a good discussion with a friend about what we've been through so far in life -  the life-changing moments we've had, the risks we've taken, and the heartaches we've been through. It left a lasting nostalgia in me until this morning. I recalled my mistakes from previous years which invoked so much emotion in me. I remembered the time I was depressed and full of hopelessness. I remembered how lost I was and felt like I was going nowhere in life. Then I remembered the first Feast Conference I attended in Cebu back in 2015. The theme was 'Coming Home'. Being far away from home and from God that time, the conference truly moved me in ways I didn't imagine. I was praying and crying alone in my chair, praising God after a long time of being away from him. My faith was reaffirmed.  I knew that from that time on I just needed to trust God and His plans for me. A few months after, I found the strength to finally quit my beloved but toxic job and ...

A Lenten Sacrifice

Image
James and I agreed to abstain something for Lent. We love eating so I finally convinced my boyfriend to give up one, if not the most, of his favorite food. For him it was his favorite street food proben. For me it was Jollibee. The past forty days was tough for the both of us. Proben was found everywhere in Roxas Night Market. I had to drag my boyfriend away so that he wouldn't dare grab a stick. On the other hand, Jollibee has been my comfort food ever since I could remember. Spicy chickenjoy was my Jollibee favorite and it always made my day eating one. It was tough for us to look away or walk away from our cravings. But each time we deny ourselves, we are able to triumph against physical/material urges. We are also reminded that our simple sacrifices are nothing compared to what Jesus has endured for us. I hope that our small sacrifices during the season of Lent may have been pleasing to God. Finally, Easter has come and the days of abstinence are over. Christ has risen fr...

The Widow's Offering - A Gospel Reflection

Today's gospel is one of my favorite readings and is reminiscent of my Catholic school education. Gospel: Lk 21:1-4 -      Jesus looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury of the temple. He also saw a poor widow, who dropped in two small coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them. For all of them gave an offering from their plenty; but she, out of her poverty, gave all she had to live on.” The story of the widow teaches us about generosity in proportions. Rich men were in the temple offering more in terms of monetary value while the poor widow offers perhaps the smallest amount of them all. However, Jesus points out that the widow has given more in terms of spiritual value than all of them for she has given all she had in order to live on. My Christian Life Education book depicts her carrying a child while humbly offering the two coins. She could have used it to buy food or other basic needs for her...

The #fivesecondprayermovement

I've been posting these random prayers in my twitter with the hashtag  #fivesecondprayermovement. This idea came to me when I was travelling via airplane and I had so many worries with me. I found myself whispering a random prayer. It was brief and beautiful and it brought me relief and strength. Sometimes a small prayer is all we need. When I got my signal back, I posted that prayer on twitter, hoping to be able to share the meaning of that prayer to my friends and followers. There are many circumstances in day when we can say a prayer - when you want to pray for the begging man you pass by on the street, when you see the news about the Syrian refugees fleeing their countries because of war, or for the health of your parents before you leave the house. A five-second prayer will do. So here I am sharing this prayer movement, so that during some random times of our life, we won't forget to praise, ask for forgiveness or thank God for all He has given us. I encourage everyone...
