Beating the El Niño Heat

Summer's almost up and the weather's heat is more than usual. Here in the Philippines, we will be experiencing El Niño, a climate pattern associated with warmer surface waters from the Pacific Ocean. To those who live in the city like me, this phenomenon can be felt through the higher than usual temperatures during the day and some notable droughts which affect our food and water supply. So far, we are currently at 37-41 degrees Celsius and if we are not careful, a heat stroke could attack us anytime.

Here are some ways that can help beat the El Niño Heat:

1. Drink lots of water (while making sure you are conserving it!)

The heat dehydrates our body so we have to replenish it as quickly as we can. If there's any major use for water right now, that should be for our personal consumption. So if you are using excess water for bathing or you like turning the faucet open while brushing even if you are not using it, then you better cut off those habits. Just think that instead of wasting it, you should be actually consuming it. Conserve and keep drinking!

2. Stock up on chilled stuff

Who doesn't have a ref at home? Why not use the empty spaces in the freezer to make some ice or ice candies? In days of unbearable heat, it helps to munch on to some chilled sweets. And since you might get dehydrated before you could get to an ice cream store, it's best if you've prepared ahead some cool stuff in your freezer. Another tip, it's always refreshing to have chilled fruits that are ready to eat. Just make sure they don't rot before you need to consume them.

2. Stay In

Of course, summer's about going to the beach or pool. But the heat that strikes us, especially between 12nn-4pm (sometimes even as early as 11am), can be very dangerous. Even with the sunblock on, it's never a solution to dehydration or a protection to possible heat waves. Better to stay in and do some indoor activities to avoid the heat. If you insist on going to the beach, make sure you're prepared with all your necessary protection and lots of water. And again, avoid exposure between 12nn-4pm.

3. Adapt

That's right, adapt. Staying inside the room with all your aircon can be a relief from all the heat outside. But once you need to get out, the temperature is going to be intolerable. I'm not saying you expose yourself to all the heat but it can be helpful to expose yourself a little. You can use a fan instead of aircon. If you think about the bigger picture too, your condensing units are contributing to the heat outside. Do mother nature some favor and get yourself used to using a fan. It took me a while to get used to it but the heat isn't that unbearable anymore.

I'm sure there are other ways to beat the the El Niño Heat. For me, these are the most cost-efficient practices I've done so far. What's yours? :)
