What to Do When There's So Much to Do

I'm not claiming to be an expert on this topic but I would like to share my own opinion based on my fair share of experiences so far :)

Corporate jobs can be quite demanding. Fine, it's demanding. Ok, it's really really really demanding. There's so much to do, email, understand, calculate, print, scan, email, report, answer, meet and everything else. Did I mention email???

There's so much to do and there's so little time. You'll be shocked that by the end of the day, you've only ticked two to three tasks out of the eighty pending.

But what do you do when there's so much to do? Do you mope? Complain? Resign? I guess with the few years that I've been working, here are key things you need to remember and practice in order to juggle everything properly.

1. PRIORITIZE

What's urgent? What's important? What's urgent and important? Each task will weigh heavier than the other. Some items are needed right then and there. Don't get distracted (I'm guilty!) and focus on what needs to be done first. If you don't know how to sort things out, your boss should help you. Of course, never forget the little things that are still necessary to operations. Prioritizing doesn't mean you neglect those that are not urgent and important. Give time for everything and take things one at a time.

2. FASTER

Rate = Task / Time, therefore Rate x Time = Task

This is basic algebra. The number of tasks is directly proportional to your rate and time, meaning the faster/more efficient your are or the more time you give, the more tasks you finish. People usually increase the amount of time they give by doing a lot of overtime. This is not healthy though, both for you and the company. It's best if you level up your speed (not too fast that would compromise quality), in order to do more tasks. For some rare instances, you may need to increase both time and rate. But this should not be overdone because it will only result to over fatigue.

3. BREATHE

There's a reason why there's an allocated fifteen-minute break in the morning and in the afternoon. Overworking your brain cells will not do any good. When you're at the edge of your mental capacity, it really helps when you take a few minutes to stop, refresh and energize before going back again. It clears away all jumbled thoughts and lets you start anew, think clearer and do better.

As long as you find motivation at work, these three tips will surely help. I hope this will assist you in the same way that it has been helping me cope up in days of arduous work :)
